TIME MANAGEMENT

Know the true value of time! Snatch it, seize it and enjoy every moment of it. You wake up in the morning, and lo! Your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours of un-manufactured tissue of the universe of your life! It is yours. It is the most precious of possessions — no one can take it from you. It is unstealable

In this rapidly changing world, it is essential to practice self-management as well as time-management in order to deal with life's daily challenges.

"Imagine having a bank that credited your account each morning with K.Shs. 86,400.00; that carried over no balance from day-to-day - allowed you to keep no cash in your account - and every evening canceled whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day, what would you do? Draw out every cent of the day and use it to maximum advantage!

Well you have such a bank and its name is TIME. Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every evening it rules off as lost whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balances. It allows no overdrafts. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against yesterday. It is up to each of us to invest this precious fund of hours, minutes and seconds in order to get the utmost in health, happiness and success from it " (L.I.F.E.).

Using time to your advantage is a skill that can be developed. The first step for effective time management is to be aware of how you presently use your time. Gain insight into your current patterns of time-management by asking yourself these questions.

When was the last time you assessed how you spend your time on a daily basis? Do you make a daily to-do schedule? Do you complete all the items on your list? Do you try to be ten to fifteen minutes early for all appointments?

What usage of your time gives you a sense of fulfillment? Are you aware of your most creative period of the day? Do you set yourself weekly objectives? Do the activities you perform take you closer to your major goals? Are you careful to concentrate your full attention on matters at hand? Are you easily sidetracked, spending time on work that doesn't accomplish very much? Do you set deadlines for yourself to start and finish projects on time? What would you be able to accomplish if you made better use of your time? Are you able to relax in your free time without worrying about your work?

The ultimate purpose about time management is to reduce unnecessary stress and to epitomise the quality of life in all your key roles. Since time is absolute, by refining your time management techniques, you will never feel enslaved by circumstances beyond your control. The more efficiently you structure your working time, the more leisure time you will have available. The realization: "I am in control of my time" is extremely powerful, energising and dynamic. To quote Victor Hugo, "He who every morning plans the transactions of the day, and follows out the plan, carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy day. The orderly arrangement of this time is like a ray of light, which darts itself through all his occupations. But where no plan is laid, where the disposal of time is surrendered merely to the chance of incidents, all things lie huddled together in chaos, which admits neither distribution or review."
